UCSC: Porter 34B, Chaos, Fractals, and the Arts, April 2003
Week 7
- A: Midterm
- Covers the math of weeks 1-5
- B: Sue and Karl
- How do patterns emerge and disappear from seeming disorder and how do
artists and scientists explore these processes ? Suzan Friedland will
discuss how ideas developed in collaboration with her husband,
physicist Karl Young, have facilitated the exploration of
dynamic patterns in her art. She will describe how working with linen,
procion dyes, textile paints, sumi ink, adobe, and acrylics have
allowed her to capture emerging surface patterns. As a prelude to the
talk Karl will set the tone with a piece on the shakuhachi (Japanese
bamboo flute), currently one of his primary means of exploring the
emergence of pattern.
Suzan Friedland has won multiple awards and international recognition as a
mixed media artist.
Karl Young is a physicist currently doing research at the Stanford
Linear Accelerator Center and is a long time student of the shakuhachi.
