UCSC: Porter 34B, Chaos, Fractals, and the Arts, Winter 2005

This will be a 2 unit course, beginning Thursday, January 6. Every Thursday morning (10:00 -- 11:45 pm) for ten weeks, ending on March 10, we will meet in Porter D-241.

Topics: History of Art/Math interaction, from paleolithic to now.. Digital art aspects of Chaos, Fractals, Complexity, Neural Networks, Diffusion, Morphogenesis, Agent Based Models, etc.

Homework will involve readings from the text, interaction with web-based math-learning applets, and journal writing. Meetings may include lecture, demo, performance, and discussion.

Students for credit will create a project on the interface between chaos/fractals and the arts in a medium of their choice.

Grading will be based on classroom participation, midterm quizes, and the project.

NB: Students are encouraged to work on projects in TEAMS.

Auditors welcome.

No prerequisites.
