The Menomini tribe of Wisconsin and northern Michigan was one of the tribes in which peyotism was practised. Slotkin, from the Menomini tribe, studied anthropology at the University of Chicago and made a study of peyotism in 1953. He was integrated into the Native American Church of North America and was elected an official of the chruch in 1954.
