Ralph H. Abraham, Vibrations and Sustainability1. INTRODUCTION My involvement with India began in 1972, when I lived in Nainital, U.P. (near the western border of Nepal) for six months, studying ancient Sanskrit classics in English translation. On returning to the University of California at Santa Cruz I recorded my new "Indian ideas" in a paper on Vibrations and the Realization of Form. This was published in 1976 as a chapter in a book edited by Erich Jantsch and Conrad Waddington, and followed by five years of laboratory research on vibrations and morphogenesis, summarized in my book, On Morphogenesis, in 1985. While all this passed unnoticed in the American and European scientific community, I eventually received a letter of appreciation from Dr. Prasun K. Roy of Calcutta, which led to further writings along the same line -- on vibrations and morphogenesis -- and my involvement with the Einstein Institutes, and this meeting.
