Abstract: Here we present a mechanical model for the understanding of the non-linear resonance of an elastic membrane, excited by a sound vibration, in the style introduced by Leonardo around 1500, and including the catastrophe discovered by Duffing in 1900. Some applications are suggested for morphogenesis, pattern recognition, and physiology, in the style introduced by Zeeman around 1970.
